What a Subfloor Actually Is
Your subfloor is the structural layer beneath your finished flooring. In most Carolina homes it is one of two things: a plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) panel over floor joists in homes with crawl spaces, or a poured concrete slab in slab-on-grade construction and basements. The finished flooring you walk on, whether that is hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, tile, or carpet, sits on top of the subfloor, sometimes with an underlayment layer in between.
The subfloor does the heavy lifting. It carries the weight of everything in the room and provides the flat, stable base your new flooring needs to perform. Every flooring manufacturer sets specific requirements for the subfloor, and those requirements exist for a reason. If the base is not right, the warranty on your new floor can be voided, and the flooring itself will not last the way it should.
Why Subfloor Preparation Matters So Much
Subfloor preparation flooring work comes down to three goals: the surface must be flat, dry, and structurally sound. When any one of those is off, problems follow quickly.
An uneven subfloor is the most common culprit behind installation problems. With rigid materials like tile, low spots create hollow areas where the tile flexes and eventually cracks, and grout lines crumble. With floating floors like LVP and laminate, dips and humps cause planks to rock, click apart at the seams, and produce that hollow tapping sound underfoot. Hardwood nailed to an uneven base develops squeaks and gaps.
Moisture is the second issue, and it is a big one in the Carolinas. Our humid climate and clay soils push moisture up through concrete slabs and into crawl space subfloors. Structural soundness is the third goal. Rotted plywood, loose panels, damaged joists, and cracked slabs all need to be addressed before new flooring goes on top. Covering a weak subfloor does not fix it. It just hides a problem that will resurface.
How a Wood Subfloor Gets Prepped
Homes with crawl spaces, which are extremely common across Rockwell, Salisbury, and the surrounding Carolinas, typically have plywood or OSB subfloors. Proper prep for a wood subfloor usually includes several steps.
- Inspection and repair. The installer checks for soft spots, water damage, rot, and any sections that flex too much. Damaged panels are cut out and replaced, and weak areas are reinforced.
- Fastening down movement. Loose panels are screwed back down to the joists. This step alone eliminates a huge share of the squeaks homeowners live with for years.
- Leveling. High spots are sanded down and low spots are filled with a patching compound so the surface falls within the manufacturer's flatness tolerance, often no more than three sixteenths of an inch of variation over ten feet.
- Cleaning. The surface is swept and cleared of debris, old adhesive, and staples so the new flooring or underlayment sits flush.
- Crawl space moisture check. Because Carolina crawl spaces run humid, a good installer looks at the space below and confirms it has a vapor barrier and adequate ventilation before flooring goes down.
How a Concrete Slab Gets Prepped
Slab-on-grade homes and basements sit on poured concrete, and slab prep is a different job with its own challenges.
- Moisture testing. This is the single most important step for a slab. Concrete constantly wicks moisture from the ground, and installers use a calcium chloride test or a relative humidity probe to measure how much vapor is coming through. If the reading is too high, a moisture mitigation product or vapor barrier is required before anything goes down.
- Crack and joint repair. Cracks and control joints are filled and smoothed so they do not telegraph up through the new flooring.
- Grinding and leveling. High spots are ground down and low spots are filled with a self-leveling compound that flows across the slab and cures into a flat, even surface.
- Cleaning and priming. The slab is cleaned of dust, old adhesive, and coatings, and primed if the leveling product or flooring adhesive requires it.
Slab prep is where a lot of budget installs cut corners. Skipping the moisture test to save time is a gamble that far too often ends in a failed floor a year or two later.
Acclimation: A Prep Step People Forget
Prep is not only about the base. Many flooring materials, especially hardwood and some LVP products, need to acclimate to the home's temperature and humidity before installation. That means the flooring boxes sit in the room where they will be installed for a few days so the material adjusts to the conditions it will live in.
In the Carolinas, where indoor humidity can swing considerably between seasons, acclimation matters. Installing hardwood straight off the delivery truck without letting it adjust is a recipe for gaps in the dry months and buckling in the humid ones. A professional installer builds this waiting period into the project timeline rather than rushing it.
Questions to Ask About Subfloor Prep Before You Sign
When you gather quotes, subfloor prep is one of the areas where estimates differ the most, and it is often where surprise costs hide. Ask every installer these questions so you can compare fairly:
- Is subfloor inspection and prep included in this quote, or billed separately if issues are found?
- Will you perform a moisture test on my slab or check my crawl space before installing?
- What flatness tolerance does my chosen flooring require, and how will you achieve it?
- Does the flooring need to acclimate, and is that time built into your schedule?
- What happens if you discover rot or water damage once you pull up the old flooring?

What Prep Costs and Why It Is Worth It
Basic prep on a sound subfloor is often included in a standard installation quote. Additional work like self-leveling compound, moisture mitigation, panel replacement, or joist repair adds cost, sometimes a few hundred dollars and sometimes more on larger projects. It can feel frustrating to pay for a layer you will never see, but this is the least expensive place to spend money in your entire project.
