Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Flooring Contractor
New flooring is one of the bigger home investments you will make. The contractor you hire determines whether that investment holds up for decades or becomes an expensive problem within a few years. These questions will help you separate the professionals from those you should avoid.
1. Are You Licensed and Insured?
This is the first question to ask, and any reputable contractor will answer it without hesitation. Licensing requirements vary by state, but insurance is non-negotiable. You need to confirm two things:
- General liability insurance -- covers damage to your home if something goes wrong during the job
- Workers' compensation insurance -- covers any worker who gets injured on your property
Without workers' comp, you could be held financially responsible if an installer is injured in your home. Ask for certificates of insurance and verify they are current before any work begins.
2. How Long Have You Been Installing Flooring?
Flooring installation is a skilled trade. A crew that has been doing this for ten or twenty years has seen every subfloor condition, every tricky transition, and every material quirk that can come up on a job. That experience directly affects the quality of your finished floor.
Ask specifically about experience with the material you are installing. LVP, hardwood, tile, and carpet all have different installation techniques. A contractor who specializes in carpet may not have the right skills for floating hardwood or large-format tile.
Young Flooring has been installing floors across the Carolinas since 1993 -- over 30 years of experience with all major flooring types.
3. Can I See Photos of Past Projects or Talk to References?
Past work tells you more than any sales pitch. Ask to see photos of completed jobs that are similar to yours -- same material, similar room size or layout. A contractor who cannot produce examples should raise a red flag.
References from past customers are even more valuable. A few questions to ask a reference:
- Did the job finish on time and on budget?
- How did the contractor handle any problems that came up?
- Would you hire them again?
4. What Exactly Is Included in the Quote?
Two quotes for the same job can look very different depending on what each one includes. Before you compare prices, make sure you know exactly what each quote covers. Common items that are sometimes excluded:
- Removal and disposal of existing flooring
- Subfloor preparation or repair
- Transition strips and trim pieces
- Moving furniture
- Cleanup after the job
A lower quote that excludes subfloor prep can quickly become the more expensive option once hidden conditions are discovered. Ask for an itemized breakdown so you can compare apples to apples.
Good to know: Subfloor condition is one of the most common sources of unexpected cost in flooring jobs. Ask the contractor how they handle subfloor issues discovered mid-job, and whether additional charges require your approval before work continues.
5. What Is Your Payment Schedule?
A legitimate flooring contractor will never ask for full payment upfront. A standard payment structure looks like this:
- A deposit of 30 to 50 percent to secure the job and order materials
- The remaining balance due upon completion, after you have inspected the work
Be cautious of any contractor who demands full payment before starting or pressures you to pay cash only. This makes it very difficult to resolve disputes or get your money back if the work is not done correctly.
6. How Do You Handle Problems During or After Installation?
Even experienced contractors occasionally encounter unexpected issues -- a damaged board, a subfloor that needs more work than expected, or a material defect. How they respond to those situations tells you a lot about how they operate.
Ask two specific questions:
- If something is damaged during installation, how do you handle it?
- Do you offer any warranty on your labor?
A professional contractor will have clear answers to both. A warranty on labor -- typically one to two years -- shows they stand behind their work after the job is done.
